Applications for a new leadership program for high school students are due March 10. “Teen Leaders in Philanthropy,” sponsored by OMRF, will offer top student leaders from area high schools the opportunity to meet philanthropic leaders and learn more about nonprofit organizations and how giving impacts their communities.
Applicants must be rising high school sophomores, juniors or seniors to apply. Students selected for the program must demonstrate good academic standing and attend a school in the state of Oklahoma. The application includes a series of short-answer essay questions and one letter of recommendation. No more than three students from the same school will be admitted the same year. Participation will count as service hours at most schools.
“This program is for students with an interest in philanthropy or who plan to establish a career in business or with a nonprofit agency,” said Kelley McGuire, OMRF director of development and TLP coordinator. “Philanthropy plays an important role in the corporate world, and this course will help students to learn more about it before they start their own careers. Through our program, students will meet scientific and nonprofit leaders from OMRF and across the state and have the chance to connect with like-minded teens from other Oklahoma schools.”
Program topics include basic philanthropy, development, board structure, networking, fundraising and social media. Participants will take part in a mock board meeting and learn how to use social media as branding and fundraising tools.
If selected, students must attend a mandatory opening retreat on Sept. 10. Monthly group sessions will be held on selected Tuesdays throughout the 2013-14 school year. The program will end on May 13, 2014.
