The Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation is now accepting applications for two summer internship programs: the Sir Alexander Fleming Scholar Program and the Langston University Biomedical Research Scholars Program.
Both programs are paid, eight-week biomedical research internships in the laboratories of the Oklahoma City nonprofit. Participants earn $15.50 per hour, plus free housing for those who otherwise would travel at least 40 miles to OMRF.
The Fleming Scholar Program is open to current Oklahoma high school seniors and college students currently in their freshmen through junior years who graduated from Oklahoma high schools. Founded in 1956, the program is named for Sir Alexander Fleming, the Nobel Prize-winning scientist who discovered penicillin and dedicated OMRF’s first building.
Founded in 2021, the Langston Scholar Program is open to students who are currently in their freshman through junior years at Langston University.
Some interns return to work as OMRF lab techs during the school year.
“Our summer programs give students a chance to experience science in a way that a textbook can only hint at,” said Ashley Cheyney, Ph.D., OMRF’s director of scientific training and outreach. “Our scientists are doing exciting work, and by the end of the summer, many scholars have caught that enthusiasm for research.”
Applications for both programs will be accepted through Feb. 1, 2027. For more information or to apply for either program, visit omrf.org/SummerScholars.
