OMRF again named state’s No. 1 employer

December 7, 2023

The Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation has again been recognized as the state’s top workplace.

The 2023 Top Workplaces rankings resulted from an anonymous employee survey on factors such as job satisfaction, management quality, pay and benefits, and opportunities for growth.

For the fourth time in the competition’s 11-year history, OMRF placed first among large employers (350+ employees). OMRF also received special recognition for being a workplace that employees believe is headed in the right direction.

The Oklahoman newspaper announced this year’s winners at an event in Oklahoma City on Wednesday, based on results compiled by Energage, a Philadelphia-based research and consulting firm. The same firm recognized OMRF earlier this year as one of the nation’s best workplaces.

“Our goal is to offer an environment where everyone understands their contributions make an impact,” said Courtney Stevens Greenwood, OMRF’s vice president of human resources. “There’s a shared sense of purpose, from entry-level laboratory technicians to the people keeping our heating and air conditioning systems running to the folks tracking expenses in accounting.”

In their survey responses, employees also cited OMRF’s family atmosphere, supportive and creative culture, workforce diversity, emphasis on work-life balance, and a sense that each person plays a crucial part in fulfilling OMRF’s mission of helping people live longer, healthier lives.

“Science can be a very competitive field,” said OMRF scientist Jordan Fuqua, Ph.D. “As a result, some labs around the country reflect a culture of competition rather than collaboration. That’s not true here. Everyone I’ve encountered is supportive and friendly.”

Shawna Pistole joined OMRF’s accounting team in September because, she said, “I love the good work that’s being done here to benefit the world.” Since then, Pistole has worked to transition OMRF to a new payroll and HR platform. “I have access to everyone I need, and my input is valued, which is wonderful.”

For Stevens Greenwood, OMRF’s longtime run on the Top Workplaces list validates her team’s efforts at continual improvement.

“We work hard to make OMRF a wonderful place to spend a career,” she said. “The feedback we receive through the Top Workplaces survey helps confirm we’re still headed in the right direction, and that’s incredibly special.”
