The Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation is now accepting applications for its 2007 Sir Alexander Fleming summer scholarship program.
The eight-week science program lets students develop their research skills by working alongside world-class researchers in OMRF’s laboratories. The application deadline is February 1.
“We’ve seen students come through this program and emerge with a much clearer vision for their future,” said OMRF President Stephen Prescott, M.D. “It’s an unparalleled opportunity for bright young people to get hands-on training in medical research, and they can stay right here in Oklahoma to do it.”
High school seniors, as well as college freshmen, sophomores and juniors, are eligible to apply for Fleming scholarships. Applicants must be residents of Oklahoma at the time of high school graduation and at least 16 years of age to apply. The scholarships include housing during the program, if needed, and a $3,000 stipend.
The program, which celebrated its 50th anniversary this summer, was named in honor of Sir Alexander Fleming, the Nobel-prize winning scientist who dedicated OMRF. Since the program’s inception in 1956, more than 435 Oklahoma students have been named Fleming Scholars.
Three Fleming alumni currently serve on the foundation’s scientific staff: Rodger McEver, M.D., Judith James, M.D., Ph.D., and Andrea Sestak, M.D., Ph.D.
