Fishing tournament nets funds for cancer research

October 12, 2010

Fifty fishing enthusiasts took to the water at Foss Lake near Clinton on Sunday morning as part of the 25th annual Frank Wohl Memorial Bass Tournament. When the last catch was weighed, anglers had raised more than $3,600 to support cancer research at OMRF, bringing the cumulative total to over $48,000.

The tournament was first organized in memory of Clinton businessman and fisherman Wohl, who died of cancer in 1985. Wohl’s daughter later died of cancer, and other family members have also been diagnosed with the disease. Wohl’s widow, Jean Wohl, was on hand to distribute trophies and make the check presentation.

“Our family appreciates all of OMRF’s research efforts in trying to find a cure for cancer,” said Randall Wohl, Frank Wohl’s son.

Fishermen Shawn Cole of Oklahoma City and Scott Miller of Weatherford brought in five fish totaling over 17 pounds to take first place.

“The Wohl family’s dedication to this cause over these 25 years is admirable, and the funds they have raised will make a difference in OMRF’s cancer research efforts,” said Will Merrick, OMRF director of development.

The family announced that 2010 year would mark the event’s final year bearing the Wohl name. Organizers plan to continue with a fishing event to benefit OMRF in 2011.
