Organizers of the Cimarron Bait and Tackle Tournament are hoping to land the big one as they raise money for OMRF.
The bass fishing tournament, sponsored by the Pump Jack Tavern in Guthrie, will be held April 18, with all proceeds going to lupus research at OMRF.
“We came up with the idea when I found out a friend’s niece has lupus,” said owner Beverly Williams. “We want to help find better treatments for the disease. Because OMRF is at the forefront of research on lupus, we know our donation will make a difference while keeping the research money in Oklahoma.”
Lupus is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system becomes overactive and turns against the body, attacking cells and organs like they are germs or an infection. The disease, which has no known cure and can be fatal, affects as many as 2 million Americans, predominantly women.
OMRF is one of the world’s leaders in lupus research. Its scientists have played a key role in identifying many of the genes associated with the disease and in finding ways to predict its onset.
The entry fee for the fishing tournament is $40 per two-person team. For entry information, call (405) 260-2582.
