Foundation Names Fleming and Foundation Scholars for Summer of 2001

July 13, 2001

Oklahoma City, OK – Twelve students have been named Sir Alexander Fleming Scholars by the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation. Additionally, four teachers have named as Foundation scholars.

Since 1959, seven to ten students a year are named Fleming Scholars in honor of Sir Alexander Fleming, the scientist who discovered penicillin and, in 1949, dedicated OMRF. Fleming Scholars are Oklahoma students ranging from rising high school seniors to college juniors.

Fleming Scholars work in OMRF laboratories during June and July and will receive a total salary of $2500. Students will work under supervision of OMRF scientists and each scholar will attend seminars and conferences and will present a paper on his/her research project. Papers or abstracts are then published.

A more recent innovation is the Oklahoma TeleScience Project. The Project is designed to provide selected public high school science teachers, designated as Foundation Scholars, with laboratory training and experience at OMRF and ongoing mentoring and encouragement when they return to their classrooms.

Foundation Scholars spend eight weeks in June and July working in a research laboratory with senior members of OMRF’s scientific staff. When they return to their schools, their classrooms will be equipped with a computer and access to the OMRF and the World Wide Web. Scholars will receive $5,000 fellowships for the summer.
