World class mountaineer, photographer and lecturer Ed Viesturs, D.V.M., will speak at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation on Wednesday, March 7 at 5:30 PM. The topic of his speech, “Montaineering at the Limits of Human Endurance,” will focus on the physical and neurological changes experienced by climbers in high altitudes with limited oxygen. The lecture is free and open to the public.
With twenty – two years of active climbing and guide experience throughout the would, Ed Viesturs led the IMAX film expedition up Mount Everest in 1996. He had ascended Mount Everest five times – three times without the use of supplemental oxygen. He has climbed twelve of the world’s fourteen highest peaks, all without oxygen, and is the third person in the world to climb the three highest peaks in the world (Everest, K-2, Kangchenjunga), again without oxygen. In addition, he has 187 ascents of Mount Rainier.
Viesturs has been featured in both print and film media, including the recent Sony adventure film release “Vertical Limit,” where he was cast as himself. he has been featured in magazines such as Climbing Magazine, Reader’s Digest, Time, Newsweek, Men’s Journal and The New York Times.
Averaging forty appearances and lectures a year, Viesturs has addressed corporate gatherings for Microsoft, Merrill Lynch, Charles Schwab, US West, Boise Cascade, and the United Way. His speaking topics include the 1996 Everest IMAX expedition, including the tragedy where several members of a separate climbing group were stranded on the peak during a blizzard.
The OMRF lecture will focus on the physiological and mental aspects of climbing up to 29,000 feet without supplemental oxygen. Limited seating is available. Please make your reservation through the RSVP phone line.
