The OMRF Multiple Sclerosis Center of Excellence is committed to providing comprehensive and compassionate medical care of the highest quality. To achieve that goal, a multidisciplinary team of medical professionals works in a coordinated fashion to offer and execute a treatment plan, promote wellness, and improve quality of life.

In addition to direct patient care, we are also devoted to the advancement of scientific knowledge of demyelinating diseases through clinical and basic research. The OMRF Multiple Sclerosis Center provides a wide range of services:

To determine whether newly developed treatments are safe and effective, physician-scientists rely on clinical trials. These studies are not only important research tools; they also provide patients with access to experimental therapies not yet widely available.

Because technologies and therapeutic options are continually developing, the OMRF Multiple Sclerosis Center uses clinical trials as one way of delivering cutting-edge treatments to our patients. Of course, participating in clinical trials is optional. But many choose to enroll to receive new therapies and improve standards of care for individuals with MS. Patients also receive medication, laboratory and diagnostic procedures, and intensive medical evaluation and assessment—all at no cost.

Patients may also participate in our MS Center Registry and Repository. This unique research tool allows individuals with MS to provide clinical information and samples to help our physician-scientists better understand this complicated disease.

Clinical research is proving that with comprehensive disease management, we can impact the course of the disease, achieve normal or near-normal life expectancy, reduce the potential for significant disability, and improve quality of life.

Through educational programs for patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals, the OMRF Multiple Sclerosis Center is focused on helping improve the quality of life for MS patients and the family members who help care for them.

With a dedicated MS clinical coordinator and a team of experienced health providers, we offer a variety of educational support services to patients and families. To assist rural and local physicians in coordinating patient care, the Center maintains a comprehensive central MS database. We also provide a series of continuing medical education courses to give physicians, physican assistants, physical therapists, and nurses the knowledge they need to deliver specialized MS care.

These multi-tiered educational programs help patients and those who care for them better understand, manage, and take control of disease.

The MS Center is housed in OMRF’s research tower, a 186,000-square-foot center for basic and clinical research opened in 2011. Supported by grants from the federal government, the State of Oklahoma, and private donors, this $70 million tower will be the first medical research facility in the world to harness the wind to help power its labs. It was selected as a finalist for the 2010 Renewable Energy World North America Award.

Through clinical and laboratory research programs, the physician-scientists at the OMRF Multiple Sclerosis Center are studying the root causes and progression of MS. These analyses encompass the study of immunologic mechanisms, genetics (single genes), genomics (all genes and their inter-relationships), and the influence of environmental factors such as viruses and nutrition. With comprehensive coded patient databases and a unique repository of biological samples, the Center is creating a shared resource that enables collaborations with institutions across the country and beyond. The Center’s scientists team with researchers across the U.S. and Europe to help advance the understanding, treatment, and prevention of MS.
